Food Inc. Assignment

Choose one of the following

1-Write a five page paper.
After watching Food Inc., think about what you’ve learned in this class and about one part of the film that interested you. Research more about that aspect of the film – fast food, corn, obesity, from seed to supermarket, poultry farming, industrial farming, food safety, or any other topic and connect it to what we’ve learned about civics and economics. Write a paper using the rules laid out in your UNCSA English class, focusing specifically on information on any one aspect of the American food system; for example:

· Congress and farm subsidies
· interest groups & food
· antibiotics in the food system
· The FDA

You will be graded on the amount of information you learn about your topic and the connections you are able to draw to our class. This could be organized as a paper or a blog, film, video, Facebook page, or another digital space.

2-Here’s a list of Ten simple things you can do to change our food system. 1) Stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages. 2) Eat at home instead of eating out. 3) Bring food labeling into the 21st Century. 4) Tell schools to stop selling sodas, junk food, and sports drinks. 5) Meatless Mondays—Go without meat one day a week. 6) Buy organic or sustainable food with little or no pesticides. 7) Protect family farms; visit your local farmer's market. 8) Make a point to know where your food comes from—READ LABELS. 9) Tell Congress that food safety is important to you. 10) Demand job protections for farm workers and food processors, ensuring fair wages and other protections.

Do something about food, for example: form an interest group about food and work for change on campus, in the community, or beyond; lobby your local, state, or national government and demand change in the food system, meet with your senator, send letters, start a petition, do something to connect to government; stage a teach in and show Food, Inc. followed by a discussion of what people can do here; put flyers up around campus; document your own work following the 10 rules above in your own life and document your work on a blog, film, video, a facebook page, or another digital space.

You will be graded on how hard you work and how much you accomplish.
